Silent Retreat

Jesus often invited his disciples to 'come away to a quiet place' to be refreshed. This day of rest and silence offers you the opportunity to do just that, to be aware of God's presence within you and around you. For those who wish, there will be meditation beginning at 9:15 am and an opportunity to meet with a spiritual guide.

Do you desire to live more peacefully and have God the center of your daily living? Christian meditation is one way to help you become fully human, fully alive and centered in truth. Christian meditation changes people and the world in which they live. This weekly prayer time consists of listening to a 15 minute taped reflection by Dom John Main, OSB and 25 minutes of silent meditation.

Earth's beauty and diversity often fill us with feelings of awe and wonder allowing us to sense the Divine. Yet we live in a time of ecological decline caused by human activity. The cry of the earth is an expression of the cry of Jesus in His Passion. This program, the Spirituality of St. Ignatius in a communal setting, is a continuation of what was begun in September 2005.

Meditation is a very simple process by which we prepare to be at peace with ourselves and others and our world so we can appreciate the peace of God living within us. On Mondays, beginning January 16, six introductory sessions will be offered on Christian Meditation to all desiring this simple form of prayer. Input will be given on: What is Christian Meditation? Where is it rooted in tradition and Scripture? Why is it a beneficial way to pray? There will be tape, video and witness presentations, time for questions and for practicing this ancient form of prayer.

Staff

KATHLEEN BOLGER, CSM, has a Master of Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, Chicago, and a Master of Education from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. She has received Certification in the Enneagram Process, is an accredited Spiritual Director and has certificates in Adult Facilitation Skills. Presently she is coordinator of Christian Meditation for the Atlantic provinces.

MARIE CAHILL, CSM, R.N., received her Nursing Education at the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing, her B.Sc.N. at Ottawa University and a certificate in Theological Studies from Regis School of Theology, Toronto, Ontario. She is a qualified Spiritual Director and since 1990 has been teaching the Process of Focusing. Marie is a Certified Trainer in this process and prepares others to become trainers.

EDNA GALLANT, CSM, has a Master of Christian Spirituality from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, and a Master of Religious Education from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is a trained Spiritual Director and has experience in retreat work. She works as an Adult Catechetical Teacher and is presently Director of the Spirituality Centre

MYRNA AYLWARD, CSM, is a licensed PRH (Personality and Human Relations) Educator. SHe is a member of the PRH International and PRH Edmonton, AB. Myrna is presently working full time in the area of personal growth and development. She provides workshops, follow-up group work and counseling services to individuals, couples and groups.

Program Leaders

JOAN BEAGAN and her husband have a family of five, as well as ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. In 1993 Joan retired from the Diocesan Pastoral Center after twenty years of faithful service. She is a long time member of the Island Directors of the Ignatian Exercises (IDIE) and is a qualified director of Ignatian Spirituality. She is a Team Member for Living Our Faith.

MARY CUMMISKEY, CND, is a member of the Congregation of Notre Dame. She has her B.A. and B.Ed. degrees and has much experience in the Senior and Junior High levels of teaching. She is a qualified spiritual director and has been ministering in the area of retreats and spiritual direction for many years. Presently Mary is involved in the following volunteer ministries: Project L.O.V.E., Upper Room and Red Cross Friendly Visitor Program.

NORMA HANNOUCH was first introduced to Christian Meditation while living in Montreal. Laurence Freeman gave a presentation on John Main’s teaching at the Company where she was employed. Her journey took root at the Benedictine Priory where she attended weekly talks and meditation. She has been a meditator for twelve years.

MARY MAKUCH, a retired school teacher, has completed the six year formation program at the Ignatian Spirituality Centre in Montreal She is experienced in providing Spiritual Direction and leading groups in Ignatian Spirituality. Before taking up residence on the Island, Mary has been a teacher and facilitator of the Ignatian Prayer Companion Program as well as a member of the Directed Retreat Team in Montreal. Mary was also involved in the Spiritual Direction Program at Newman Centre, McGill University, Montreal.  She is a Team Member for Living Our Faith.

LEAH AND GILLES MICHAUD have been educated in the Ignatian method of spiritual guidance. As members of the Atlantic Association of Spiritual Exercises (AASEA) for the past 28 years, they have participated and assisted in formation programs for individual and communal spiritual direction. They recently returned to PEI after serving for 5 years at the International Secretariat of the Christian Life Community in Rome, Italy.

ALINE REID, has a B.A. from UPEI and has taught in Primary and Secondary Schools on and off the Island for many years. Aline is an Associate of the Sisters of St. Martha. She is involved in Ignatian Spirituality Programs, is a member of the Island Directors of Ignatian Exercises and has facilitated the RCIA process. She participates in various caring ministries with the elderly in their homes as well as in nursing facilities. She is a Team Member for Living Our Faith.

For a weekend retreat, the registration fee of $25.00 is required. This will assure you a place. Please mail or drop the registration fee at Mount St. Mary's.

  • We want to share the gift of our Spirituality Centre and what it offers to all people. If you feel excluded from taking part in any of the programs because of finances, we do offer an alternative. Please call
  • Spiritual Direction is an opportunity for on-going faith development under the guidance of a trained director. It helps people to explore their own spiritual journey, to embrace the values they cherish, and to be attentive to God's presence in the ordinariness of daily life. Times and sessions are arranged in consultation with a director. Offerings are left to the discretion of the person being directed.
  • A Guide Retreat provides silence and solitude, daily reflective materials and presentations that will give the possibility of touching the deeper areas of one’s spiritual experience and growth. It includes one or two conferences with opportunities, for those who wish, to see a director individually during the course of the retreat.
  • A Directed Retreat includes silence and solitude and daily conversations with a director who may offer suggestions for personal prayer. These meetings focus on the individual’s experience of God in prayer and assist the retreatant in discerning the movements of the Holy Spirit in his or her own heart.
  • In the spirit of our Congregation vision of “reverencing all creation” the Centre is now a smoke andsent free environment.
